I wouldn't know where to stop.
ReplyDeleteHa Ha Ha... "Burning question"... Fire dept... I get it.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't that be RVFD, for Redway Volunteer Fire Department, instead of RFVD?
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting 4 hours this morning to see photos taken at the BBQ and it is almost lunch time and still no pictures. Nobody can make me believe folks sleep this late.

I'm away from my computer lately. My wife's family is here from Pennsylvania, and my sister is here from San Francisco. I have been showing them the LAST REDWOOD. I'm doing this post from my cell phone. photos of the BBQ later
ReplyDeleteIt's been awhile since I have been to Humboldt County so I am wondering if that Last Redwood is the one in the road at Richardson Grove.

Ernie should be back at work tomorrow. Then he will have more time to post!!!
ReplyDeleteAnon Just thinking??? Why is Redway called Redway??.
ReplyDeleteGood question. It is known that it was the Burris Brothers, who gave Redway its name, one year after Hubers started 'Edgewater Park' with its famous beach, around 1922-3.
I have a McClure family history of early Redway. While the Burrises were building on their properties, the McClures built the first house in Lower Redway, other than the Huber place. (I believe that these are the words and reminescences of Bill McClure):
"At that time there were several tribes of Indians in the area--I believe from the Briceland area. I recall watching what might be called pow-wows about where the bridge is now at the mouth of Redwood Creek. They'd catch salmon, steelhead and big eels with pitchforks. Then they'd smoke them over big fires on the beach on racks made from willow and alder trunks. The steelhead and salmon were very good; but I never could stand smoked eel".
It was the Burris brothers who set up Redway to be a resort community, complete with golf course(sans grass), and clubhouse. Their plan to build a large resort hotel in Redway died during the Depression.
Mr. McClure tells of being the first life guard at Redway Beach. "My instructions were to the point*****no litter bugging, no loud noises especially using the word HELP unless Help was needed---and NO animals on the beach. People were to be properly dressed which included which included boys and men in bathing suits Had to have tops--no bare chests and trunks---and females---well bikinis hadn't been invented or even thought of---and I recall females had legs that went down to about the knees--boy aint I an old timer." (1974)
He also mentions having to enforce the whites only rules. The beach was popular and drew people from afar, leading to a system of membership, in an attempt to control the visitor numbers, as hundreds would be at the beach at a time.
A little Redway lore til Ernie gets back.
My mom lived in Laytonville growing up and I remember her telling me she went to a camp of some sort on the river in Redway. She said it was just a grassy field at the time. Early 30's.

There are descendants of both McClure and Huber still live here.
ReplyDeleteIt’s RVFD because spellcheck doesn’t work on capitol abbreviations.
Sheese OMaR, that doesn’t tell us why it’s called Redway, just who named it.
I went back and cleaned up all of my accidental postings from my cell-phone. It’s difficult to really know what you are posting at molasses speed. I waited until I got home to correct it. I was afraid that I would delete my whole blog, or something, if I didn’t just quit while I was ahead!
I give up, going back outside.

ReplyDeleteFarop, the word verification word, just stole my identity...how did that happen?
ReplyDeleteSorry to disappoint about the naming of Redway, never seen it recorded, but there is a geographical town name book for California that may have that answer.
If we were to start a bullshistory version of the naming of town, my entry would be...
Redway was named Redway because of the embarrassed female faces when hundreds of GI's stationed on that empty field during the war swarmed the river, and proceeded to skinny-dip en-masse. Until Reggae on the River, this is believed to be the largest skinny-dipping incident in county history.
This incident did happen and was recorded by David Jabusch in his "Redway, a Family History". It is a wonderful local read that really gives the feel for when there were fewer people living here. It wasn't til just after WW II that the bank of Scotia decided to get a better return on its money and started hauling up gravel from the river for the roadway beds, as a resort was turned into a town.
Perhaps the saddest information in his book was that there was a grove of redwoods across the river from the "Fortuna Flat" part of Redway that included an oldgrowth tree comparable to the Founder's tree in size that was taken out by Tooby and Pryor in 1949. The manner of the taking of the grove turned him into an "instant conservationist".
On page 30 he says: "For me the only comforting thought I associate with the logging across the river is the delicious irony that today, just down the hill from Garberville, stands a pitiful little park of less than a dozen small trees, dedicated to Tooby, who, but for the desire for a few more dollars that he probably never spent, could have forever had the most spectacular redwood park in the wold dedicated to his memory."
He shares that in 1949,
Try drinkin some coffee for you post OMR... just a suggestion.
ReplyDeleteGood suggestion Idaho.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to add that the McClure family built down in Edgewater Park in 1925, about the same time as the YMCA was getting built across the river, with McClure help.
The golfcourse had no water for fairways or greens, so some high grade sand was "rake" with a carpet like device when you used to "smooth the greens". He wrote that it wasn't very desirable, you went to Benbow if you wanted to golf. It lasted from about 1925-26 to the Depression, and served more than once as an airplane landing strip.
To keep the record clean, that McClure place was the second home built in lower Redway, but not as part of the Edgewater Park (north and by the beach) development. A map shows the McClure home to be south of the bridge to Briceland at the mouth of Redwood Creek.
ReplyDeleteSome scientists are now saying that cell phones/towers are what is killing off the honey bee's. Screws up there nav system to boot.

My little cousin Jessica is running for Orick Rodeo Queen this year and I see that there are 2 people running against her. One is a boy. I say California is a leader again.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have moved one more state further away.

hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteMy son has a good friend who has a very pretty wife and everybody that knows them pretty much drools over her. There was a bunch of us together a few years ago and somebody is always talking about how wonderful she is. Bill said "She's wonderful alright, I have a king size water bed upstairs and I call it the dead sea."
Now I don't want to make comparisons here but this is starting to look like the dead zone. I thought I could stir something up with my morning comments but it doesn't look that way.

My fault, Oregon,I put them to sleep with my Redway history posts, and clarifications, and corrections, and so forth.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe folks are experiencing Pre Traumatic Stress Syndrome for what we are dimly sensing is coming. The news management of the mainstream media is a real work of evil.
The bees dying is a quiet nightmare.
Everyone in Iceland is expecting the larger explosion of the sister volcano to one that went off, as is the usual pattern. Stay tuned on that one.
Oil in gulf=shit
Hurricane season=fan.
Last year the hurricane season was relatively mild, will it be this year?
For every attempt to turn down the temperature of the Middle East, there are those who inflame and inflame.
Pardon this bummer, but I feel like I am watching a train wreck in slow motion, and folks are still partying like its 1999.
peace within, olmanriver
I think I feel the same as you Ernie. I hate to check the news in the mornings because it does look like the sky is falling.
ReplyDeleteI know the oil spill is bad but at least people are trying to stop/fix it. The one thing that makes me want to take up arms is the South boarder that Washington DC will not fix. I truly believe it is just for future votes and not a humanitarian move by the President. Calif. wants to boycott Arizona for having a bill to enforce a federal law and Calif. has one of their own that I never hear mentioned. California Penal Code 834b.

I remember,,,, hold on here, I'm old, I think about 1963 or 64 I went with Ernie to San Francisco. He handed me a business card with what looked like some bad looking toupees on it, in red I think. It was a Beatles card, you know, the guys from England. I was fairly young at the time so I thought it was just a city thing when Ernie told me what it was. Long hair on a man I thought. Shit! This can't be! Don't get me wrong here, I like some of the Beatles music but I always had reservations. I still don't to this day like long hair and jewelry on a man. Now last night Paul whats his name was singing to Mechelle (sp)Obama and,,,well after all these years I have finally made up my mind about the Beatles.

After review of the last 3 posts here I have decided I am officially OLD.
