The world is ending tomorrow!

Or: "I've discovered the ememy, it is us!"

Human body heat equals 182,500 BTUs per year.
Standard heat load calculation tables tell you to allow 500 B.T.U.s per day, per person, in a building occupation heat load. So, if a human gives off 500 B.T.U.s per day, they will give off 182,500 B.T.U.s per year.

6.8 billion people on the earth.
If there are 6.8 billion people in the world, (there are!) that would be 1,241,000 billion B.T.U.’s per year in human occupation load. Or 1.241 Quadrillion B.T.U.s.

Human body heat melts 4.31 billion tons of ice per year.
I takes 144 B.T.U.s to melt a pound of ice. I'll skip through all of the calculations, because if you really cared, you would have already calculated this out. There are enough humans on the eath to melt 4.31billion tons of ice with body heat alone.

That's a lot of Polar Bears.
How many Polar Bears can float on 4.31 billion tons of ice??? That's per YEAR.

Now sadly, that is not the only warming that humans do. Other things that they do to contribute to keeping the globe warm is: Most of them have heated houses, cars that take them hither and yon, heated swimming pools. They uses tons of energy that is wasted as heat. It soon becomes appearent that humans are a real problem on this Earth.

Earth is a big place, and we are such small people.
Fortunately the Earth is a large dynamic, many things also serve to cool the Earth. The Earth radiates heat back out into space. Much like when you stand in front of a heater, you feel the heat radiating toward you, only the heat from Earth radiates into outer space. Gone forever, never to return. There is nothing out there to reflect it back once it leaves our atmosphere. Our Earth would get mighty chilly if it weren't for the Sun shining on us. The sun is the only thing that keeps us warm. All of our energy comes from the sun. Our days are shorter in the winter, and we get colder, because we have less Sun.

Co2
Co2 blocks the Sun from coming to Earth, and it also blocks the heat from radiating back out. It has some effect, but not as much as dust in our atmosphere. Back in 1991, when Mount Pinatubo erupted, the summers got cooler and the winters got warmer. The good news is most of us lived through it.

Here is a little "Climate change graphic that you can play around with. just to see if you can kill the world with Co2.
Climate change model graphic

Global warming conference in Copenhagan.
The Copenhagen Climate Conference will be using 140 private aircraft, and 1,200 limos. There is such a shortage of limos that they are driving them in from other European countries. They will be using so much fuel during the conference that they will equal the Co2 output of Middlesbrough UK. The good news is that the prostitutes are offering free sex to anyone carrying a climate conference pass. It seems to strongly imply that someone is going to get screwed.

Why not just send emails? Oh that’s right, they are too easily intercepted. Al Gore should have worked on that when he invented the Internet. (Joke) It seems like even the best plan has it’s flaws.

This isn't the first time that the world has ended.
In 1798 Thomas Malthus incorrectly predicted that population growth would outrun food supply by the mid 19th century. In 1968, Paul R. Ehrlich reprised this argument in The Population Bomb, predicting famine in the 1970s and 1980s. The dire predictions of Ehrlich and other neo-Malthusians were vigorously challenged by a number of economists, notably Julian Lincoln Simon. Agricultural research already under way, such as the green revolution, led to dramatic improvements in crop yields. Food production has kept pace with population growth, but Malthusians point out the green revolution relies heavily on petroleum-based fertilizers, and that many crops have become so genetically uniform that a crop failure would be very widespread. Food prices in the early 21st century are rising sharply on a global scale, and causing serious malnutrition to spread widely.

Too many people anyway.
I really don't like to complain about things without offering a solution. Throughout history it has been obvious that all of the worlds problems have been caused by the fact that there are just too many people on this small little Earth. So, I'm making a survey to find how many people are willing to get off. I pass....

  2. Sarah Palin said today, after Al Gore accused her of being a “denier”, that she believes Global Warming is real, but it's not mans fault, and that she doubts that Al Gore can fix it. I took a few liberties in what she said, but that's essentially correct.

I think that she has been reading my blog, because that has been my basic philosophy.

  3. I hear that besides our sun we get radiation from another sun that creates heat on earth too.
It' seems that since the earth is 2,000,000°F only 2 kilometers down from the surface that would help heat the surface too. I can't see too much heating going on in White Swan, WA. during the winter months but why would Big Al Gore lie to us about something like that. I'm sure he has scientific proof to back his claims up.

  5. "Co2 blocks the sun from coming to the earth, and it also blocks the heat from radiating back out. It has some effect, bit not as much as dust in the atmosphere. Back in 1991, when Mt. Pinatubo erupted, the summers got cooler and the winters warmer."

Allow me to tune these scientific misconceptions.

The greenhouse effect occurs when short wavelengths of visible light from the sun passes through the atmosphere and warms the surface of the earth which re-radiates longer waves of light in the infra red spectrum back into the atmosphere where it is trapped. Mt. Pinatubo released millions of tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere which resulted in a decrease in temperature world wide over the next few years.

  6. Dear "Correct my misconceptions”

The next time that you get outside, when the sun is out, hold your hand out. The heat that you will feel on the palm of your hand, is from the Sun. Without Co2 in the atmosphere your hand would fry like an egg. So, what I said was correct.

What you said is true, about the radiation energy being converted to heat. It is also true what you said about Mount Pinatubo and sulfur-dioxide. But dust alone is also a factor, along with many others. The earth cooled in the summer, and generally cooled as an average, but the winters WERE WARMER, as I said. So you are incorrect if you think that winters weren’t warmer. I see no reason to give all of the details, because what I said was 100% correct, but you still chose to refute it. Why not be right instead of engaging in foolish semantics that mean nothing.

  7. Ernie, you are just flat wrong. The added particulate matter from Pinatubo blocked short wave radiation summer and winter. Winters were cooler. You can't save what you haven't gained. You are not being reasonable and your science sucks.

  8. Anonymous,
The following is from a study done by the Max Planck Institute. You must be listening to AlGore science.

Quote: “By comparing the climate simulations from the Pinatubo eruption, with and without aerosols, the researchers found that the climate model calculated a general cooling of the global troposphere, but yielded a clear winter warming pattern of surface air temperature over Northern Hemisphere continents. The temperature of the tropical lower stratosphere increased by 4 Kelvin (4°C) because of aerosol absorption of terrestrial longwave and solar near-infrared radiation. The model demonstrated that the direct radiative effect of volcanic aerosols causes general stratospheric heating and tropospheric cooling, with a tropospheric warming pattern in the winter.
"The modeled temperature change is consistent with the temperature anomalies observed after the eruption," Stenchikov says. "The pattern of winter warming following the volcanic eruption is practically identical to a pattern of winter surface temperature change caused by global warming. It shows that volcanic aerosols force fundamental climate mechanisms that play an important role in the global change process." Unquote

  20. The winter time warming effect was greatest over continents in the northern hemisphere because that is where the clouds formed. There are fewer continents in the southern hemisphere. The wintertime warming that took place in the troposphere over N. latitude continents was on average .05 Celsius. So whether world-wide wintertime temperatures in the troposphere went up world wide is debatable. On average, I think that overall tropospheric temperatures averaged lower in '92 and '93.

The bands of the co2 molecule oscillate at the same frequency as infrared radiation, trapping it and sending it back toward the earth. The atmosphere is what keeps us from frying.

Depleting carbon sinks like forests and peat bogs while releasing fossil carbon into the atmosphere has raised carbon levels by 30%. The carbon cycle is no longer a closed system. The oceans have become saturated with co2 and are not keeping up with the carbon loading of the atmosphere.

Whatever, the atmosphere is warming. Permafrost is melting releasing methane throughout the circumpolar regions. Reflectivity is being lost with increasing summertime arctic ice melt which is causing the surface to faster. The summer season has extended by a full month since the eighties and many parts of the arctic average 8 degrees F warmer.

Keeping in mind that climate swings are cyclic, it does not surprise me much that warmer temperatures have preceded cyclic co2 upswings. Other forces work on the climate. What should be worrisome is the extra 'kick' this warming trend might get with added co2 and methane as well as other greenhouse gases such as No2 that we're putting in the atmosphere. The question that many scientists are asking is whether the cycle will repeat itself as it has done in the past, returning the climate to another ice age, or will it just continue to warm up.

Back in 1960 or so this liberal women wrote a book that some claim killed millions of people worldwide. It is said DDT was the best thing that ever happened to curb malaria and then Ms. Carson came out with the book "Silent Spring" so now we have sqitters up the ying yang.
I remember my mom would wipe the window sills in the spring time with DDT and we never had a fly in the house all summer.

  35. Oregon
You are exactly right. The spraying of DDT reduced the incidence of malaria by 60%. However, it made eggshells soft. DDT was banned in 1972, but is still being used in other counties on an emergency basis.

    from Wikipedia:
First synthesized in 1874, DDT's insecticidal properties were not discovered until 1939. In the second half of World War II, it was used with great effect to control mosquitoes spreading malaria and lice transmitting typhus among civilians and troops, resulting in dramatic reductions in the incidence of both diseases. The Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Müller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1948 "for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods." After the war, DDT was made available for use as an agricultural insecticide, and soon its production and use skyrocketed.

In 1962, Silent Spring by American biologist Rachel Carson was published. The book catalogued the environmental impacts of the indiscriminate spraying of DDT in the US and questioned the logic of releasing large amounts of chemicals into the environment without fully understanding their effects on ecology or human health. The book suggested that DDT and other pesticides may cause cancer and that their agricultural use was a threat to wildlife, particularly birds. Its publication was one of the signature events in the birth of the environmental movement. Silent Spring resulted in a large public outcry that eventually led to most uses of DDT being banned in the US in 1972. DDT was subsequently banned for agricultural use worldwide under the Stockholm Convention, but its limited use in disease vector control continues to this day and remains controversial.

Along with the passage of the Endangered Species Act, the US ban on DDT is cited by scientists as a major factor in the comeback of the bald eagle, the National bird of the United States, from near-extinction in the contiguous US.

  36. Dang Ernie, you always on top of things. here I thought the liberals got DDT banned because it made their egg shells soft and they were thinking the conservatives would take over.

  37. When I was kid my father used to spray DDT in our yard to keep down the mosquitoes. We lived in the woods situated in the mid west. I remember finding a dead yellow billed cuckoo in the back yard a day or two after dad had sprayed. I remember thinking that there was a connection between the DDT and the dead bird. I remember when DDT was outlawed. The stuff never broke down. It eventually ended up in the streams and lakes where it got into the fish. From the fish it got into the the ospreys, bald eagles, loons, and no doubt turtles and whatever else ate fish, like otters, blue herons, and people. I am not aware of any other problems that it caused than fish eating birds were laying thinner shelled eggs and eggs with no shell at all. Oh, it finished off some of the best pheasant hunting ever. This was due to spray programs in every county. County trucks used to spray the ditch banks to eradicate mosquitoes, no doubt they eradicated many a pheasant nest at the same time. There is a good chance that everyone who lived through the sixties has DDT stored in the fat of their bodies.

Man, I know what mosquitoes are. I've been where they were so thick that I was inhaling them. But, I think that there are other insecticides that are safer in the environment than DDT.

  38. Oregon and I are cousins, his mom was my dad's sister, their mother was my grandmother Ruby. Gramma Ruby bought a ton of DDT from this traveling salesman. The DDT came in cans of powder. If you bought enough cans of powder they would throw in a pump sprayer. I used to like to spray the dust around, so I got to spray the cow barn, and the chicken pen, and anywhere else that you might find a bug. Just like Oregon’s mom, my mom would paint the window sills with the stuff. It was the best stuff going. The dogs didn’t have fleas or ticks, the cow barn didn’t have flies. The chickens didn’t have those little red lice that they used to get.

It was only just recently that I remembered that the chickens started laying soft shelled eggs. We didn’t relate it to the DDT at the time. My grandmother asked at the feed store what might be wrong. They told her that she needed to feed the chickens oyster shell, which we did, and it helped a little bit, but the chicken eggs were still soft. I remember my Grandmother saying that it was probably those darn Montgomery Ward chickens and the next time she was going to buy them from the local feed store. As I said, we never did relate the soft egg shells to the DDT. I can still smell the stuff in my mind.

  44. Wow! I remember that we used to get a few soft shelled eggs from our chickens. I'm the guy who's dad sprayed DDT in our yard. He had a home made tank sprayer mounted on tires that he'd built. He pulled that with a tractor he'd built from a Cadillac rear end and axle cut down to the width of a lawn tractor. He also cut down a foreign car front straight axle to the same width. He used an old GMC truck transmission. It had a creeper gear. He powered the tractor with a 12 horse, horizontal shaft Briggs and Stratton engine. The engine's shaft had a triple v pulley and the drive shaft was a universal jack-shaft with a triple v pully, spring loaded and operated by a foot pedal. You could plow in creeper gear or run down the road at 40 mph.

Anyway, when we got on the subject of DDT I imagined that I could still smell it. It wasn't till Ernie mentioned that he could still smell the stuff that it dawned on me that I could too.

Smell is a very powerful aid to memory. The smell of spring takes me back as well as does the the smell of fall. Both of those seasons I associate with many fond memories spent in the woods as a boy.

  47. they used to spray ddt on peaches to kill the oriental fruit fly. by the time i started working for del monte on a peach ranch, ddt had already been banned. but that didn't stop them from spraying a wide variety of other pesticides. i have done some spraying but i usually drove the water truck and brought sacks of pesticides out to the fields to mix where they were spraying. sometimes we would wear a yellow rain outfit and a gas mask when we mixed the stuff. we would spray parathion at night in the winter, seven in the summer when the fruit flys started showing up in the traps and copper sulfate whenever it looked like rain. we sprayed so much in the summer just before we picked that i still won't eat fresh peaches after all these years. in fact, i pretty much stay away from all fresh fruits and vegtables. the main priority for most u s corporations is the bottom line.
we did have to have a blood test before we sprayed to determine if we had too high a level of pesticide in our blood. i went to a stephen gaskin sunrise service at sutro park above the cliff house after spraying copper sulfate for a month and he asked me what that green color was doing in my aura. i wound up in the hospital during the astronauts on the moon trip and it took the doctor a week and a spinal tap to figure out what i had. my blood was totally under seige by white blood cells. they called it infectious mono but i almost died from it. i couldn't donate blood for a long time after those days. they wouldn't accept it. i'm just saying that they still don't know the long term effects of the pesticides that replaced ddt.

  48. Since we are sharing DDT stories... When I was about 7, in the mid-1950s, I once looked up from my salad as my family was seated at the dinner table. I told my folks the salad tasted as if it had DDT in it.

Dad looked at me and smiled. Have you ever eaten DDT? he asked me. No, I replied.

Then how do you know the salad tastes like DDT?

    Eat your salad.

And with that, he required me to eat the whole green tainted mess.

    The End.
