Yuck!!!!
Kristabel just did a post wondering how to cook a good egg. Numerous people said DO NOT use a Teflon pan because of the chemicals that it releases. Then my good buddy Kim Sallaway sends me this:
“The revelation in Hong Kong that melamine was also in eggs has led to questions over whether the chemical, which is normally used to make plastics, had been mixed into livestock feed and contaminated China's wider food chain.
Zhang Zhongjun, programme officer with the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation in China, said the melamine in the eggs could mean the chemical was present in a wide range of foods such as farm-raised meats and fish.
Zhang told AFP that China's agriculture ministry was investigating the possibility that melamine had been mixed into farming feed.”
The UN-credible Un-edible egg.
This is just one more thing that you can thank Wall Street for. Sending egg production to China! ("We live in a world ecconomy now", you have to die to eat)
Does anybody know where I can buy farm fresh eggs, grown here, with real food.
If you are lucky, you may find "Ishi Eggs" or other local eggs at Chataqua. It seems to be very iffy but I buy a few dozen if I find them.
ReplyDeleteErnie, advertise on Craigslist under livestock that you are looking for farm fresh eggs in the SoHum area. Then you can hook up with a regular supplier. Just bring your own carton. Or you could always get a few chickens yourself...
ReplyDeleteI get the organic ones from Sonoma county, and hope for the best. We had a couple of banty hens for a year in my youth. There was usually only one egg a day, and we took turns eating them.
ReplyDeleteI try to always eat home grown (fresh) eggs however I never did look at the sacks of chicken feed to see where the scratch comes from. I assumed it is from the USA.
ReplyDeleteI like the green eggs and if you want the green ones you will have to find somebody that has Araucana chickens.
Oregon
I hate to sound paranoid but the thought crosses my mind now & then that our country might be being sabotaged from the outside in. I have not seen one word on any of the blogs, for instance, about who or what is buying up all the cheap, foreclosed real estate in, say, the Central Valley of your fine state. According to a building contractor friend of mine there, the majority of buyers aren't American citizens or corporations.
ReplyDeleteGiven all that's going on & all that's gone on with our "poisoned food" & economy just in the last two years, I think Osama bin Laden, wherever he is, must be laughing his ass off.
I've LONG been concerned about all of the American jobs that Wall Street has given to other counties, and having to trust offshore products. Somehow I just can’t bring myself to think that it is fair to have to compete with a 12 year old Chinese girl. And I certainly Don’t trust any country that would force young children into the labor pool. This lack of trust is not racism, sexism or ageism, it is simply not liking the feeling that the American worker is disposable.
ReplyDeleteEveryone I know has long been concerned. Question is, what do we do about it? Voting doesn't seem to work.
ReplyDeleteAlright Robin, I agree with what you are saying but, what does this have to do with eggs?
ReplyDeleteI think there is one too many eggs in your nest as pictured.
I thought you wanted some light hearted conversation here. I would add my two cents on the way this country is going but I don't feel like getting beat up here.
Oregon
Go ahead Oregon, I think that it's fun when you wack the hornets nest!
ReplyDeleteWhat this country really needs is a conservative party that is based on reality, and a liberal party that didn't want to give away the shirt off my back.
P.S. It’s okay to get off-subject on this blog. If it's on your mind it's pertinent.
Ernie, I know it is okay with you to get off subject here. However, I only brought up the subject with Robin as I can do it annonymously.
ReplyDeleteI know I don't have a chance with her in an argument ( she isn't always right) but I always end up being toast when I cross her in person.

the concern about labor in this country is well justified. but one of my first jobs was working for del monte on a peach ranch when the bracero program was still in effect and they were basically housed in barracks and their room and board was deducted from their checks. at our ranch we had whole familys picking under their dad's social security number. one family had a 16 year old boy, a 13 year old boy, a 12 year old girl and an 11 year old girl and a 8 year old boy plus a 5 year old boy and the mother picking under the dad's number. where i work now they replaced all the oakies and arkies with mexican nationals after busting the union and now they are using white college kids again because the mexican nationals don't know how to run the high speed computers. the labor force changes along with the technology. so ive seen it come full circle. now they are trying to get rid of me because they fired all their real hr people and they don't know about age discrimination, or any other type of discrimination for that matter. its all about the bottom line. screw somebody who worked for you for thirty years because they now get 4 weeks vacation when you can hire someone new with no benefits. it's called greed. and it's rampant in american business and labor practices. they replaced my old job with a computer six months ago and now they are complaining because their products are showing up in stores mislabeled and its costing them thousands of dollars.
ReplyDeletebut that's one of the bugs in going to high speed production. it's called no quality control. in other words, it's not just the eggs you have to worry about.
Blogs are great! I just found where I can get a dozen free-range chicken eggs a week.
ReplyDeleteThat's great Ernie. Better find out where their scartch comes from. I get free range eggs to but they are given feed along with all the bugs they eat while free ranging. Just hope there are not any chinese beatles out there. LOL

Hi Ernie. And also hello to Ernie's friends. We were having a conversation around the lunch counter about this egg/melamine issue. Apparently melamine somehow registers more protein than is actually there in a product when it is tested for nutritional value. Remember when Chinese dog food was killing American dogs? Then Chinese milk killed Chinese kids. Watered down milk with a little added melamine tested fine for proteins. It just isn't good for infant formula.
ReplyDeleteNow it is in the eggs.
There are widely circulating unanswered questions about the entire food chain in China being contaminated.
All of this has me thinking the garden at the community park is one of the best things we SoHummers can benefit from. Farmer John and his crew put great food on our table this summer. We picked up our box of freshly harvested organic food once a week during the summer growing season which unfortunately ended last week. One thing I am quite certain of... there will be no Chinese food product or by product on the menu at Chez Kim.
Mmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteMelamine.

The answer is the Unions need to be re-born, take power in workplaces all over America, and control the federal goverment. Short of that, it's all just politicians producing public relations hype about how much they "care" about Americans and "how unfortunate" it is that "nothing can be done" about the poison in our food, the American jobs being shipped to China, and the stink of corruption hanging over the Capitol.
And did I mention that the workers need to control their unions and not let a handful of unelected self-appointed bosses run those unions without regard for the workers they are supposed to represent.
ReplyDeleteI don't like your suggestion, 11:40/43 - not one bit.
